Iran's Arrival in the United States

The Iranian national football team has landed in the United States ahead of their inaugural match against New Zealand in the FIFA World Cup 2026, scheduled for June 16 (IST). Their arrival in Los Angeles coincided with a peace agreement between the US and Iran, marking a significant moment as it is the first time the Iranian team has set foot on US soil during the World Cup. Due to a US mandate, the team has established its base in Tijuana, Mexico, as their stay in the US is limited. Enhanced security measures have been implemented around their hotel, where they will be residing. Additionally, the team encountered protests from anti-regime demonstrators, who displayed banners criticizing the Iranian government and showcased images of individuals they claim were victims of the ongoing unrest in the country.

Challenges Ahead of the Match

A Chaotic Build-Up

Iran has encountered numerous challenges leading up to the World Cup. Several players were denied entry into the US due to the strict immigration policies linked to their alleged associations with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This occurred after delays in their visa processing. Initially, the team planned to base themselves in Arizona but opted for Tijuana to sidestep complications. However, traveling just a day before their match could pose a disadvantage. Despite these hurdles, Iran's coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed confidence in his team's ability to perform well against New Zealand. "We are here to deliver a quality match and remain focused on our performance, disregarding the surrounding distractions," Ghalenoei stated during a press conference. He acknowledged that all teams face their own challenges, many of which are unrelated to football.

Iran is placed in Group G, competing alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand. Their campaign will kick off against New Zealand on Tuesday morning, with the match set to start at 6:30 AM IST.
