Iran Football Team Arrives in the US Ahead of World Cup Match
Iran's Arrival in the US
The Iranian national football team has arrived in the United States, gearing up for their opening match against New Zealand. They landed in Los Angeles just before a peace agreement was finalized between Iran and the US. The match is set to kick off at 6:30 AM IST on Tuesday (June 16) at the Los Angeles Stadium.
Upon their arrival, striker Mehdi Taremi expressed a desire for unity among people, emphasizing that their focus is solely on football and not politics. He remarked, “I have sensed the tension since we arrived for this World Cup. In tournaments marked by tension, the joy and peace we usually associate with them are diminished. I understand that other countries have faced visa issues and training camp changes as well. The anticipation that typically surrounds the World Cup seems to be lacking this time.”
Taremi continued, “We play for every Iranian, whether they are in the diaspora or back home. While opinions may differ, our goal is to bring joy to all Iranians, regardless of where they are. We are here to play football, not to engage in politics.”
Notably, the conflict between Iran and the US lasted for 108 days before a peace agreement was reached, following a US attack on February 28 and Iran's retaliatory missile and drone strikes.
In the weeks leading up to the World Cup, it was announced that Iran would conduct their training in Mexico rather than the US, arriving in the US just a day before their match against New Zealand. Following this game, the Iranian team will depart the US immediately before returning for their subsequent matches, as they are scheduled to play all three group stage games in the US.
Upcoming Matches for Iran
After their encounter with New Zealand, Iran will face Belgium on Monday (June 22) in Los Angeles, followed by a match against Egypt on Saturday (June 27). Historically, Iran has yet to advance beyond the group stage in World Cup tournaments.
