Upcoming Friendly Matches

The Indian national football team is gearing up for two friendly matches against New Zealand on November 12 and 15, 2026, coinciding with the FIFA international match window. The first match will take place at the Go Media Stadium in Auckland, followed by the second at the One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch. This series was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to New Zealand and is part of a broader initiative to commemorate ‘100 Years of Unity Through Sport’ between the two nations.

Historically, India and New Zealand have clashed on the football pitch twice before. Their first encounter was a goalless draw during the 1891 Merdeka Tournament in Malaysia. More recently, in 2018, New Zealand triumphed over India with a score of 2-1 in the Intercontinental Cup held in Mumbai. This upcoming tour marks the Indian football team's inaugural visit to New Zealand and their first trip to an OFC member nation since 2005, when they played two friendlies against Fiji.

India's head coach Khalid Jamil expressed enthusiasm about the matches, stating, "Facing teams that compete at the highest level is always a positive experience. New Zealand is a well-structured team with recent FIFA World Cup experience, and playing away from home against them will provide a significant challenge for our players. We are eagerly anticipating these matches." New Zealand recently participated in the FIFA World Cup, where they drew with Iran but suffered losses to Egypt and Belgium.

Sarpreet Singh's Potential Participation

Will Sarpreet Singh Play against India?

Since the announcement of the tour, there has been considerable excitement surrounding Sarpreet Singh, with fans curious about the prospect of the New Zealand player facing his country of origin. Ahead of the FIFA World Cup, Sarpreet shared insights about his Indian roots, stating, “I come from a typical Punjabi family with many uncles, aunties, and cousins. We often played backyard cricket and a bit of basketball,” he told Sportstar after New Zealand secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 last year.
