India's Positive Finish in AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers

India wrapped up their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign on a high note, achieving a 2-1 win over Hong Kong in Kochi. This victory propelled the Blue Tigers five spots up in the FIFA rankings, now positioned at 136th, a notable rise from 141st, which is tied for the third-highest increase in Asia alongside Myanmar and Laos. This match also marked Khalid Jamil's inaugural win as head coach and India's first success in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers.

Ryan Williams made a significant impact in his debut, netting an impressive early goal. Akash Mishra later contributed with his first goal for the national team, establishing a two-goal lead. Although Everton Camargo scored late for Hong Kong, it only added a moment of tension as India secured a hard-fought win.

Returning to Kochi after a decade, the national team attracted a good crowd eager to see India win in the city for the first time in ten years. The match kicked off with excitement, as Manvir Singh raced down the right side and delivered a perfect cross to Williams, who finished with the outside of his right foot. This early goal set the pace for India, whose dynamic front four of Williams, Manvir, Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Liston Colaco consistently challenged Hong Kong's defense.

Despite creating several opportunities in the first half, India couldn't extend their lead. In midfield, Anwar Ali and Apuia formed a makeshift duo, facing some pressure due to Anwar's unfamiliar role, but Apuia's composure helped stabilize the team. After halftime, India maintained their momentum, and just four minutes in, Akash Mishra scored, sweeping in a second ball after a chaotic sequence initiated by Rahul Bheke's long throw. This marked a significant milestone for the fullback, as it was his first goal for India.

Despite the victory, India did not qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2027, finishing last in their group with five points from six matches, trailing behind Singapore (14), Hong Kong (8), and Bangladesh (5). This outcome signifies the first time in 11 years that India will miss the continental tournament. Over the years, India's FIFA ranking has fluctuated, with the lowest being 173 in March 2015. Although their qualification hopes were dashed, the 2-1 win over Hong Kong serves as a morale booster for the Blue Tigers as they aim to rebuild under Khalid Jamil.
