Mexico City, June 12: A remarkable chapter in football history unfolded at the Mexico City Stadium as the FIFA World Cup 2026 commenced. At merely 17 years old, Gilberto Mora made his mark by becoming the youngest player to ever don the Mexican national jersey, El Tri, during their opening match victory against South Africa.
Mora's moment came in the 65th minute when he was substituted in, igniting a thunderous cheer from the home crowd, which included renowned boxer Canelo Alvarez.
At 17 years and 240 days, Mora is now the sixth-youngest player to appear in a World Cup match. He follows in the footsteps of legends like Pele (17 years and 235 days), Salomon Olembe (17 years and 185 days), Femi Opabunmi (17 years and 101 days), Samuel Eto’o (17 years and 99 days), and Norman Whiteside (17 years and 41 days).
Hailing from Tuxtla Gutierrez in southern Mexico and developed at Tijuana, Mora made his professional debut just shy of his 16th birthday. Since then, he has soared to prominence, much like the eagle featured on his nation's flag.
He has shattered age records in Liga MX, emerged as one of Mexico's most promising young players, and showcased his talent at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile 2025, where Mexico reached the quarter-finals, displaying a level of maturity that belied his youth.
Mora's rise with El Tri began at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, where coach Javier Aguirre placed his trust in him during critical moments. He debuted against Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals, becoming the youngest player to represent Mexico's senior national team, and assisted Raul Jimenez for the crucial goal in the semi-final against Honduras.
The 17-year-old is distinguished by his ability to read the game, receive passes in tight spaces, evade defenders, and distribute the ball with impeccable timing. He is not just a young talent; he possesses the poise, creativity, and bravery to demand the ball under pressure.
In a seasoned Mexican squad that could benefit from youthful energy and creativity in the attacking phase, Mora introduced a controlled unpredictability and a fresh perspective.
