GUWAHATI, Oct 15: For a centre-back, scoring goals is not typically the primary measure of success. The focus is usually on thwarting opponents, organizing the defense, and achieving clean sheets.
However, after several seasons in the Indian Super League (ISL) without finding the net, Gaurav Bora's recent goal held special significance for him and his friends, who had eagerly anticipated this moment.
On October 11, during a match in Margao, the Churchill Brothers defender scored with a header in the 57th minute, marking the team's first goal in the top tier of Indian football. This goal also contributed to the Goan club's inaugural ISL victory, a 2-1 triumph over Mumbai City FC.
“Honestly, I still can’t believe it. I haven’t fully grasped how significant this moment is,” Gaurav expressed excitedly during a phone call from Goa.
“My initial goal was to score in the ISL. This is my eighth season, and until now, I hadn’t scored a single goal. My friends often asked, ‘When will you score?’ After so many matches, when I finally did, they weren’t just congratulating me; they were relieved that I had finally found the net!” he shared.
Following his goal and being named man of the match, Gaurav reached out to Sunil Patwal, the person who first introduced him to football.
“I sent him a message saying, ‘Thank you so much for everything.' I will always be grateful to him because I believe he has played a crucial role in my football journey,” he noted.
Gaurav began his football career in Delhi and has played for various clubs, including NorthEast United FC, Mohammedan Sporting SC, Odisha FC, Chennai City FC, and Pune City FC. He has also been part of the India Under-23 team.
Defending can be a tough role; a single error can lead to a loss, while successful tackles often go unnoticed.
“I aspire to score more goals and maintain clean sheets. For defenders, achieving a clean sheet is akin to scoring a goal,” he remarked.
“Centre-backs face many challenges, as one mistake can cost the entire game. I’ve faced that in my career too.
“I strive to maintain a positive outlook and surround myself with supportive people. I keep close to my family, parents, and friends who help me recover and improve.”
At 28, Gaurav understands that the path to the senior India team is challenging, but his aspirations remain strong.
“As a player and an individual, there’s always room for growth. I aim to better myself every day. There are areas where I can enhance my skills.”
“Regarding the Indian national team, whenever the coach believes I’m ready, I want to be there. The dream is always to represent the senior national team.”
For now, Gaurav can relish a moment he and his friends have long awaited. His first ISL goal has finally come, securing its place in the history of Churchill Brothers.
