Increased Financial Distribution for World Cup 2026

The FIFA Council has announced a significant increase in financial support for the 48 Participating Member Associations ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The total financial distribution has surged to nearly USD 900 million, reflecting a 15% increase from previous allocations. This decision was made during a meeting in Vancouver, Canada, just 44 days before the tournament kicks off. The breakdown of the increased funds includes preparation money rising from USD 1.5 million to USD 2.5 million, qualification funds increasing from USD 9 million to USD 10 million, and additional contributions for team delegation costs and ticketing, totaling over USD 16 million. FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed pride in the organization’s robust financial standing, emphasizing the commitment to reinvest resources back into the sport.


Regulatory Changes for World Cup 2026

In light of the expanded tournament format, the FIFA Council has confirmed that yellow cards received during the World Cup will be reset after the group stage and again following the quarter-finals. Additionally, new regulations regarding player conduct have been approved, addressing situations where players leave the field in protest or cover their mouths during confrontations.


Upcoming FIFA Events and Regulations

The FIFA Council has designated Armenia and Georgia as the hosts for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2029™. Furthermore, Miami has been confirmed as the venue for the final phase of the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup™, scheduled for January 27 to 31 next year. The FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026™ will take place in Qatar from November 19 to December 13 this year. Key dates for upcoming competitions have also been included in the Men’s International Match Calendar, such as the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, and the Concacaf Gold Cup from June 19 to July 11, 2027. The FIFA presidential election for the 2027-2031 term will occur at the 77th FIFA Congress in 2027, with the electoral period commencing on April 30, 2026. Additionally, a proposal requiring senior club teams to field at least one homegrown player from the U-20 or U-21 category is set to be discussed in the coming year.
