FIFA Considers Historic Match Between Israel and Palestine for Under-15 Tournament
FIFA's Ambitious Under-15 Tournament Plans
FIFA is currently evaluating the possibility of hosting a symbolic match between Israel and Palestine as the inaugural game for a new global Under-15 tournament set to take place in the United States this September. This proposed match is part of FIFA's efforts to launch the first edition of this youth competition, which, while not officially recognized as an Under-15 World Cup, will be accessible to all 211 member associations of FIFA. Notably, the tournament will also feature Russia, despite its national teams being suspended from senior international competitions.
The announcement regarding the Under-15 tournament was made by FIFA in December of the previous year. The organization views this competition as a significant opportunity not only for the development of young talent but also as a means to promote peace and unity through football, a vision strongly supported by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The idea of an opening match between Israel and Palestine comes in the wake of a tense moment during FIFA's 76th Congress held in Vancouver last April. At that event, Infantino attempted to orchestrate a symbolic handshake between Jibril Rajoub, president of the Palestinian Football Association, and Basim Sheikh Suliman, vice-president of the Israel Football Association. However, the attempt ended awkwardly when Rajoub refused to stand next to Suliman, despite Infantino's repeated requests, leading to an uncomfortable situation.
Despite this incident, FIFA remains committed to pursuing symbolic gestures involving both football associations. Insiders have indicated that the governing body is undeterred by the previous setback. Infantino has expressed gratitude towards both representatives from Israel and Palestine, emphasizing their equal rights and responsibilities as FIFA members. He stated, “Let’s work together to give hope to the children, let’s work together for that.”
While the official venue for the tournament has not been confirmed, Miami is considered the frontrunner due to its extensive FIFA offices and its potential as a prominent location for the tournament's debut. The September event will feature boys' teams, with plans for a girls' edition to follow in the subsequent year. FIFA aims to further develop this initiative by 2028, with intentions to host separate annual festivals for boys and girls, highlighting its long-term dedication to youth football and international collaboration.
