Atlanta, July 15: As England gears up to take on Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, defender Marc Guehi emphasizes that the pressure lies with Lionel Scaloni's team.
This match marks the first encounter between England and Argentina in over two decades, with the Three Lions set to meet La Albiceleste in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday. Historically, England has faced Argentina five times in World Cup history, emerging victorious in three of those matches.
Guehi stated, "The pressure is on them, they are the world champions. It's the game of your life. You have to do what you can for your country."
Winger Noni Madueke expressed confidence in England's ability to instill fear in their opponents, noting that this is the fourth time the team has reached the semi-finals. He believes that the current form of England's forwards will keep the opposition on edge as they strive to secure a second star on their shirts in the United States.
“As (Bukayo) Saka mentioned, we have match-winners, and throughout the tournament, we haven’t been overly concerned about the opposition. I think other teams will be more worried about us,” he remarked.
Saka added, “It often comes down to key moments. We have many players capable of creating those moments, so we just need to stay focused, keep the ball out of our net, and trust that one of us in the front line will deliver a moment of magic to win the game.”
England's manager, Thomas Tuchel, has the chance to become only the fourth coach to lead a team to a World Cup final that is not their home nation, following in the footsteps of Austrian Ernst Happel, who achieved this with the Netherlands in 1978. However, his squad will face a formidable challenge against Argentina, who have reached the World Cup semi-finals for the third time in the last four tournaments.
