Guwahati, June 25: On June 23, Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name in football history by becoming the first player to score in six consecutive FIFA World Cups.
The 41-year-old forward netted two goals as Portugal dominated Uzbekistan with a 5-0 victory at Houston Stadium, bouncing back from a lackluster 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match, further solidifying his legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.
This latest milestone adds to a remarkable journey that began in 2006 in Germany, where a young Ronaldo scored his inaugural World Cup goal. Since then, he has consistently found the back of the net in the tournaments of 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and now 2026.
Known as CR7 to his fans, Ronaldo quickly silenced any doubters by scoring within the first six minutes against Uzbekistan, amidst ongoing discussions about his place in the starting lineup.
Ronaldo's ascent from humble beginnings in Madeira to the pinnacle of football has been marked by resilience. At just 12 years old, he left home to join Sporting CP's academy in Lisbon, where he faced homesickness and ridicule for his accent. A heart condition nearly derailed his career three years later, but emergency surgery allowed him to continue chasing his dreams.
Despite facing scrutiny throughout his career, especially after moving to Saudi Arabian football, Portugal's coach Roberto Martinez has consistently supported him.
Ronaldo's second goal of the match, scored in the 39th minute, brought his World Cup total to 10, surpassing Eusebio's previous record for Portugal.
In a FIFA interview, Ronaldo reflected on his achievement, stating, “I don’t look for records; the records look for me. Scoring in six World Cups is something I never imagined, but it demonstrates that with dedication and sacrifice, anything is achievable. The toughest part is not reaching the summit but maintaining that position year after year, especially when everyone expects you to falter.”
His international goal tally now stands at a world-record 144. The evolution from a talented winger in 2006 to a precise finisher two decades later showcases the discipline and commitment that have characterized his career.
“When I began, I was just a kid with a dream,” Ronaldo shared. “People questioned my longevity and choices, but my response is always on the field. I still possess the same passion for football that I had as a boy in Madeira. As long as my legs permit, I will continue to push my limits,” he added.
This victory significantly enhances Portugal's prospects of advancing from Group K. While Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao also contributed goals, the spotlight remained on Ronaldo, whose latest record serves as a testament to his enduring greatness.
