Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Controversy in Saudi League Amid Penalty Disputes
Controversy Surrounding Ronaldo in Saudi League
Cristiano Ronaldo finds himself at the center of a significant controversy within the Saudi League, as Ivan Toney and a teammate from Al-Ahli have suggested that there are attempts to 'gift the trophy' to the Portuguese star. Following a 1-1 draw against Al-Fayha, Toney expressed his frustration regarding the refereeing decisions, particularly two penalty claims that were not awarded. This left Al-Ahli with 66 points, putting them in a precarious position in the title race.
"The major talking point was undoubtedly the two penalties; it's as obvious as it gets," Toney remarked in a post-match interview. He questioned, "If a player picks up the ball with both hands, is that not a penalty?" He further criticized the referee for suggesting they should focus on the AFC Champions League instead of the current match, stating, "How can the referee say this? We are discussing the present, and he directs us to another competition." Toney hinted at deeper issues, saying, "There are clear points of contention with the referee, but his focus seems to be elsewhere. Throughout the season, it was a clear penalty, but now, as we reach the critical phase, the decisions change.
When asked about who benefits from these decisions, Toney cryptically responded, "We know who we are chasing," seemingly alluding to Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner. He later shared videos on social media showcasing three penalty appeals from the match, asserting, "It's evident what is being influenced here. It's astonishing how such crucial moments can be overlooked or ignored. The referee's suggestion to focus on a different competition while VAR is in play is baffling. Furthermore, the referee acknowledged that the first incident was a penalty in the dying minutes, which is hardly helpful," he added.
Adding to the controversy, Toney's teammate Galeno accused the Saudi Pro League of attempting to "hand the trophy to one individual." He expressed his frustration on social media, stating, "They want to eliminate us from the championship by any means necessary, showing a complete lack of respect for our club." Currently, Al-Nassr leads the league with 70 points, two points ahead of Al-Hilal and four points clear of Al-Ahli. Their next match is scheduled for Saturday against Al-Akhdoud.
