A legal expert has suggested that the players' UK visas might be at risk, potentially barring them from returning for the 2026–2027 season. Nile Gardiner, a former aide to Margaret Thatcher, has called for the revocation of these visas, stating, "Every Argentine player in the English Premier League who participated in this offensive anti-British display should have their UK work visa revoked. There must be zero tolerance for such actions."
What Sparked This Controversy?
Currently, three members of Argentina's squad for the 2026 World Cup are playing in the Premier League: Cristian Romero from Tottenham, Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United, and Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. They were seen holding a banner that read "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" after their victory over England, which translates to "The Falkland Islands are Argentine." However, a UK immigration expert noted that it would be difficult to revoke visas solely based on the display of this banner during the World Cup, stating, "It is highly unlikely that displaying the 'Falkland Islands are Argentine' banner would, by itself, justify cancelling a Premier League player's visa." Additionally, Argentina may face further repercussions as FIFA continues to investigate the post-match incidents that have drawn heavy criticism. A few Argentine players were also involved in a physical altercation with Spain following their loss in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final in New York.
