Iran's World Cup Opener Sparks National Anthem Controversy

The opening match of Iran in the FIFA World Cup 2026 against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles was overshadowed by significant controversy during the national anthem. As the anthem played, the crowd responded with a mix of enthusiastic cheers and loud boos. Supporters of Team Melli waved flags and sang along, while others voiced their dissent against the Iranian government with jeers.

Additionally, many fans displayed Iran's pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag, which FIFA had prohibited from World Cup venues, labeling it a political symbol. Despite an urgent legal challenge to lift the ban before the match, the request was denied. Nevertheless, fans successfully brought the flags into the stadium during the Group G encounter, as evidenced by various images and videos shared on social media.

Judge Curtis A. Kin of the Los Angeles County Superior Court commented on the matter, stating, "Free speech is incredibly important, it is sacred, a bedrock of our society, but it is not without limitation, such as private actor, on private property, and as shown by previous cases, regulating in reasonable way. I deny the application," as reported by a sports news outlet.
