Mexico City, June 18: Colombia marked their return to the FIFA World Cup with an exciting 3-1 win against Uzbekistan, who were making their debut, at the Mexico City Stadium. Luis Diaz shone brightly, assisting Daniel Munoz's opening goal in the first half and later contributing to the victory in the second half.
Before this match, Colombia had not participated in the World Cup since 2022 and had a history of struggling in their opening matches, having lost four out of six previous World Cup debuts, including a 2-1 loss to Japan in 2018.
This thrilling encounter concluded with a dramatic header from substitute Jaminton Campaz in the 99th minute, capping off a successful first round of group-stage matches in North America. With Portugal drawing against Congo, Colombia has taken an early lead in Group K.
Uzbekistan celebrated a significant moment when Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored their first-ever World Cup goal, leveling the match briefly. However, Colombia's strength, led by Diaz, proved decisive.
Colombia created their first opportunity in the 17th minute when midfielder Jhon Arias hit the side netting from a distance. They came close again in the 32nd minute when Diaz's left-footed shot narrowly missed, hitting the post after getting past Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov.
It seemed inevitable that Colombia would score, and they did just before halftime when Diaz delivered a precise pass over the Uzbek defense, allowing Munoz to flick it in with the outside of his boot.
Uzbekistan fought back, equalizing with a volley from Dostonbek Khamdamov that hit the post and fell to Fayzullaev, who headed it in for a historic goal.
Colombia quickly regained the lead when Diaz's low shot slipped past Yusupov, marking Diaz's first World Cup goal.
The victory was secured deep into injury time when Cucho Hernandez skillfully won the ball on the right flank and crossed it to Campaz, who scored with a powerful header.
