CSK's Current Situation and Samson's Role

Michael Hussey, the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), recently discussed the future of Sanju Samson in light of ongoing speculation regarding MS Dhoni's return. Dhoni has yet to participate in IPL 2026 due to a calf injury. Initially, he was expected to return by the third week of the tournament, but he has not yet played any matches. In Dhoni's absence, Samson has taken on the role of wicketkeeper and is also opening the batting alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.

During the CSK versus Mumbai Indians match, Hussey provided insights into Dhoni's recovery, stating, "He is progressing really well. I know he's pushing hard to get back as quickly as he possibly can. I know all the fans want to see MS Dhoni out there playing as well. So we're hopeful maybe in the next few games. We want him back as quickly as he possibly can as well. But obviously he needs to be close to 100% ready to give his best. Because he's been batting well on the nets. He looks good in the nets. Just needs to run hard between the wickets too. Oh, I'm pretty sure he'll be behind the stumps."

If Dhoni returns to wicketkeeping duties, Samson will need to focus on his batting and fielding. CSK may also consider utilizing him as an Impact Player, a role he filled in several matches during IPL 2025. Previously, Samson captained the Rajasthan Royals from IPL 2021 to 2025 but faced challenges due to a thumb injury that limited his participation. He was ultimately ruled out of the tournament due to this injury. Samson joined CSK through a trade before the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

CSK's Performance in IPL 2026

CSK's Position in the Points Table

Currently, CSK has secured only 2 victories out of 6 matches, placing them in the 8th position on the IPL 2026 points table. The five-time IPL champions have accumulated 4 points with a net run rate of -0.780. Their campaign began with three consecutive losses, but they managed to achieve two back-to-back wins before facing another defeat. A victory against MI could elevate them to the fifth position, as MI also has 2 wins and 4 points, sitting in the seventh spot on the table.
