Vancouver, June 19: Jonathan David delivered an outstanding performance by scoring a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba contributed additional goals, leading co-hosts Canada to a resounding 6-0 victory over a depleted Qatar team at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday (IST).
This match marked the first FIFA World Cup win for the 2026 co-hosts, who now sit with four points and are close to advancing to the knockout stage. Canada only requires a draw against Switzerland in their final group match to secure the top position.
Larin, who recently scored against Bosnia and Herzegovina, opened the scoring in the 16th minute by converting a rebound. David then showcased his skills with a powerful volley that found the net in the 29th minute.
Despite the jubilant atmosphere at BC Place, the match was marred by a serious injury to Ismael Kone in the 51st minute. Qatar's Assim Madibo committed a reckless challenge from behind, leaving Kone in visible pain and clutching his left leg, as reported by AFC.
Kone was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher, waving to the audience while receiving oxygen. Madibo, who initially received a yellow card for the foul, was later shown a red card after a VAR review.
With Qatar reduced to nine players, Canada capitalized on the situation, scoring three more goals. Saliba, who came on for the injured Kone, curled in a free-kick to extend the lead to 4-0 in the 64th minute, celebrating by holding up a replica of Kone's jersey.
Another substitute, Jacob Shaffelburg, contributed to the scoreline with a fierce shot that was deflected into the net by defender Mohammad Manai, making it 5-0. David capped off the match with his hat-trick goal in the second minute of stoppage time, becoming the first player to achieve a hat-trick on home soil since Geoff Hurst for England in 1966.
