Miami, June 25: Brazil secured their place in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a convincing 3-0 win against Scotland at Miami Stadium. The match showcased an outstanding performance by Vinicius Junior, who scored two goals, alongside Matheus Cunha, who also found the back of the net, marking the return of Neymar to World Cup action.
Vinicius Junior's two first-half goals set the tone for the five-time champions, who are now set to face the runners-up from Group F on June 30 in Houston.
Scotland, on the other hand, faces uncertainty in their quest to advance past the group stage for the first time, currently sitting third in their group with three points and a goal difference of minus three.
Vinicius has made history by becoming the fifth Brazilian player to score in all three group stage matches of a World Cup, joining legends like Jairzinho (1970), Romario (1994), and Ronaldo and Rivaldo (2002). In each of those instances, Brazil went on to win the tournament.
From the outset, Brazil demonstrated their intent to dominate, quickly establishing themselves at the top of Group C. Their aggressive play and high defensive line left Scotland struggling to keep up.
Scotland had previously failed to defeat Brazil in ten attempts, and their challenge became even steeper in the sixth minute when Scott McKenna, making his World Cup debut, inadvertently assisted Brazil. Under pressure from Rayan, McKenna's pass was intercepted, allowing Vinicius Junior to sidestep goalkeeper Angus Gunn and score.
Vinicius Junior nearly added a second goal shortly after, but a VAR review ruled that he had fouled Jack Hendry before scoring.
Scotland managed to hold on for a brief period but faltered again in first-half stoppage time when Bruno Guimaraes' cross slipped past Gunn, allowing Vinicius Junior to head in his second goal. Despite Gunn's impressive saves against Rayan and Vinicius Junior later in the match, Brazil secured their third goal when Matheus Cunha scored from a setup by Guimaraes.
Scotland's hopes for a consolation goal were dashed as Alisson Becker made crucial saves, including a free-kick from Lewis Ferguson and two attempts from Scott McTominay, ensuring Brazil's second consecutive win and clean sheet.
Neymar's late-game appearance as a substitute, marking his fourth consecutive World Cup, provided an additional moment of celebration for the large Brazilian fanbase in attendance.
