Los Angeles, June 22: Belgium and Iran are still in search of their inaugural victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after both teams ended up sharing the spoils in Group G at the Los Angeles Stadium on Monday.
The match featured remarkable saves from both goalkeepers, Alireza Beiranvand of Iran and Thibaut Courtois of Belgium. Despite dominating possession, Belgium faced a setback when centre-back Nathan Ngoy received a red card.
Belgium started strong, with Kevin De Bruyne attempting a long-range shot that went off target. Shortly after, De Bruyne and Leandro Trossard worked together to create a significant chance, but their attempts were thwarted by Iranian defenders.
Although Belgium controlled the game, Iran posed a serious threat when Hossein Kanaani capitalized on a defensive error, but Courtois made an impressive reflex save to keep the score level.
Iran continued to threaten on counterattacks, and Mehdi Taremi thought he had scored from a well-executed free-kick, only for the goal to be disallowed due to offside.
Belgium kept pushing for a breakthrough, with Youri Tielemans forcing Beiranvand into a great save. Just before halftime, De Cuyper also tested the Iranian keeper, but the score remained 0-0 at the interval.
After the break, Belgium ramped up their efforts. Alexis Saelemaekers hit the side netting, while Courtois was again called upon to deny Taremi's dangerous shot. Rudi Garcia made a triple substitution to inject fresh energy into the squad, leading to more chances for Belgium.
However, disaster struck for Belgium with twenty minutes left when Ngoy's misplaced back pass led to a foul on an Iranian player, resulting in a straight red card.
Now down to ten men, Belgium faced mounting pressure, with Courtois making several crucial saves to keep the match level. In the dying moments, Belgium sought a late winner, with debutant Matias Fernandez-Pardo adding pace, and Lukebakio's curling shot narrowly missing the target.
Despite five minutes of stoppage time, Belgium could not penetrate the Iranian defense, and the match concluded in a 0-0 draw, leaving both teams still in search of their first win in the tournament after two games.
