Russian firm Fonbet is at the heart of this issue, as Pirlo's role as their brand ambassador, which began in October, has drawn significant criticism from Italian politicians amidst ongoing military tensions in Ukraine. His participation in a Moscow event, where he was seen signing autographs, sparked backlash back home. In response, Pirlo took to Instagram to clarify that his association with the brand was purely professional, linked to his coaching role in the UAE with Dubai United. He emphasized that there was no political implication behind his collaboration.
"Out of respect for the institutions, the Federation, and everyone involved, I have chosen until now to remain silent, but after learning last night that I am no longer the candidate for the bench of the Italian National Team, I feel it is my duty to clarify a few aspects. Over the past few days, I have witnessed with great bitterness the debate that developed around my name and the possibility of taking on the role of Head Coach of the Italian National Team. Throughout my career, first as a footballer and now as a coach, I have always carried out my work in full compliance with the laws of the countries in which I have worked and the contracts I have signed. The professional collaboration at the center of recent controversy stems from my career path in the United Arab Emirates and is exclusively commercial and sporting in nature. Attributing a political meaning to this collaboration means attributing convictions to me that I have never expressed and that do not belong to me," Pirlo stated.
He expressed gratitude towards Maldini and Leonardo for their trust and acknowledged their dedication to Italian football. Pirlo lamented that a sporting decision had been entangled in public discourse, attributing meanings to him that he does not endorse. He concluded, "Love for Italy does not depend on a job role. It is part of my history, my identity, and will continue to stay with me, always."

Numerous Italian politicians have reached out to Giovanni Malagò, the President of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), urging him to reconsider Pirlo's candidacy due to his ties with the Russian company. Carlo Calenda from the Azione party remarked, "Anyone who is or has been promoting Russia after 2022 should not hold national office." Pina Picierno, the vice-president of the European Parliament, added, "After yet another defeat and another missed World Cup qualification, Italian football desperately needed a cultural, ethical and managerial revolution. The choice of Andrea Pirlo goes in the exact opposite direction.”
Ignazio La Russia, head of the Senate and a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, expressed mixed feelings, stating, "Of course I am an Italy fan and Pirlo was a great champion, but as a coach, it is a leap in the dark." This situation leaves Italy in a challenging position as they seek a new head coach, having already faced refusals from Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti.
