FIFA World Cup 2026 Begins in Mexico City

The highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 officially commenced on June 11 (Local Time), featuring co-hosts Mexico facing off against South Africa in the inaugural match at the Mexico City Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 AM IST, which translates to the early hours of June 12 in Indian Standard Time.

This Group A encounter marks the start of the largest World Cup ever, showcasing 48 teams and 104 matches across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Mexico, known as El Tri, is under the spotlight as they aim for a victorious beginning in front of their home crowd, as highlighted by FIFA.

Interestingly, this matchup mirrors the opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa, where Siphiwe Tshabalala scored first for the hosts, only for Rafael Marquez to equalize for Mexico. Marquez returns to the World Cup stage, this time as an assistant coach under Javier Aguirre.

As the favorites, Mexico hopes to leverage the support of their fans and their familiarity with local conditions. Aguirre expressed that the occasion could motivate his players to shine on this grand platform.

“In my 50 years of football, I have never felt a thrill like playing in a World Cup at home. I’ve experienced a lot, but this is unforgettable. I’ve shared this with the team, and I believe they feel it too. They are comfortable and united like a family,” Aguirre stated to FIFA ahead of the match.

On the other hand, South Africa qualified by topping Group C in the African qualifiers and is eager to challenge the hosts. Head coach Hugo Broos acknowledged the tough task ahead but expressed confidence in his players' readiness.

“Mexico is the strongest team in our group, making tomorrow’s match a significant challenge for us. I assure you that my team is prepared, and we will fight for every inch and every ball for the entire 90 minutes. After that, we’ll see what happens,” Broos commented.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena shared his coach’s optimism as they approach this historic match.

“Expectations are high, and we anticipate an incredible game with a fantastic atmosphere. As a team, we are excited and understand the importance of this match for everyone back home,” Mokoena remarked to FIFA.

South Africa also received a boost with left-back Aubrey Modiba expected to return after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Possible starting XI for Mexico:

Rangel; Gallardo, Vasquez, Montes, Reyes; Gutierrez, Lira, Fidalgo; Quinones, Alvarado, Jimenez

Possible starting XI for South Africa:

Williams; Mudau, Okon, Mbokazi, Modiba; Mokoena, Sithole, Mbatha; Moremi, Foster, Appollis

With a full stadium, a worldwide audience, and the promise of World Cup history, all eyes will be on Mexico City as football's grandest event unfolds.
