FIFA World Cup 2026: Belgium to Challenge Balogun's Eligibility Ahead of USA Clash
Tensions Rise Before USA vs. Belgium Match
The anticipation for the Round of 16 match in the FIFA World Cup 2026 between the United States and Belgium has intensified. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has officially notified U.S. Soccer of its intention to contest the eligibility of American forward Folarin Balogun if he participates in the match. This follows FIFA's decision to overturn his red card suspension prior to the game.
In a strongly worded statement regarding FIFA's rejection of their appeal, the Belgian Federation made their stance clear. They indicated that if Balogun is included in the starting lineup, they will pursue further actions. “The RBFA has informed the United States Soccer Federation that it contests the eligibility of the player, should the player be listed on the referee's team sheet. This leaves all further actions open.”
The Incident Leading to Controversy
A Red Card, A Presidential Phone Call, and A Reversal
The controversy originated from the United States' match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. During this game, Folarin Balogun received a straight red card after a clash with a Bosnian defender. According to FIFA regulations, specifically Article 10.5 of the World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, a direct red card results in an automatic one-match suspension.
Initially, it was anticipated that Balogun would miss the crucial knockout match against Belgium. However, the situation took an unexpected turn over the weekend when U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to express his concerns about the officiating. He argued that the foul was questionable and that the red card was unjust for one of the team's key players, urging FIFA to reconsider the decision.
Following this intervention, FIFA announced the suspension of the automatic ban, allowing Balogun to participate in the upcoming match against Belgium. FIFA clarified that under Section 27, the ban imposed on Balogun for the game against Belgium was lifted, and he would face a suspended ban if he commits a similar offense within the calendar year.
