FIFA President Gianni Infantino Faces Scrutiny Over Balogun Suspension Controversy
Controversy Surrounding Balogun's Suspension
Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, is under fire following a request from the human rights organization FairSquare. They have urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to investigate Infantino's potential involvement in the overturning of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun's one-match suspension during the World Cup. Balogun received a red card in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which rendered him ineligible for the subsequent match against Belgium. However, the suspension was lifted shortly after a request from then-President Donald Trump.
FairSquare advocates for improved governance in sports to prevent organizations from causing harm. Trump stated, “All I did was ask for a review because I didn’t believe it was a foul. I think they made a brilliant decision; the referee’s call was terrible.” Despite the uproar, Infantino has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that FIFA's disciplinary bodies operate independently and make decisions based on established regulations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and credibility of football.
FairSquare contends that Infantino should have intervened when Trump sought to reverse Balogun's ban. Since becoming an IOC member in 2020, Infantino has pledged to act independently, free from political or commercial influences. He stated, “I will always act independently of commercial and political interests as well as any racial or religious considerations.” In December 2025, FairSquare lodged a complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee, which has garnered support from the Norwegian Football Federation and numerous Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
Recently, 72 MEPs reached out to the leaders of the 27 European Union football associations, calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Balogun decision. This followed a previous letter from 50 MEPs to FIFA on June 29, demanding accountability regarding Infantino's decision to award the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to Trump, citing “repeated breaches” of FIFA’s political neutrality rules.
