FIFA Addresses Controversial Goal as England Advances to Semifinals
FIFA Clarifies Controversial Goal
FIFA has provided clarification regarding the contentious equalizer scored by England during stoppage time (45+2) against Norway in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The organization stated that the Connected Ball Technology did not find any evidence of the ball hitting the overhead wire prior to the goal. This statement was made to address the speculation surrounding the incident that occurred during first-half stoppage time, confirming that data from the sensor embedded in the match ball showed no contact with the overhead cable while the ball was airborne.
"Prior to England's goal in the 45+2 minute against Norway, the Connected Ball sensor indicated no peak in the 'heartbeat of the ball' while it was in the air, thus providing no evidence that the ball made contact with the overhead wire or altered its trajectory," FIFA Media reported on X.
Bellingham's Brace Propels England to Semifinals
In the match, Jude Bellingham scored two goals as England came from behind to defeat Norway in extra time, securing a spot in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Real Madrid midfielder netted a late equalizer in the first half and then scored the decisive goal in extra time, leading to a 2-1 comeback victory for Thomas Tuchel's team.
Norway started strong, taking the lead in the 36th minute with a goal from Andreas Schjelderup, who finished expertly after Erling Haaland had earlier tested England's goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, with a header. England responded just before halftime when Bellingham surged forward and calmly slotted home the equalizer.
Key Match Moments
Harry Kane seemed to have given England the lead shortly after, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Norway thought they had regained the lead before the hour mark when Torbjorn Heggem scored, but the goal was overturned after a VAR review penalized Haaland for a foul on Elliot Anderson during the buildup.
Norway continued to pose a threat, with Kristoffer Ajer hitting the crossbar, while England also came close through Djed Spence after a mistake by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland. With neither team able to secure a win in regular time, the match proceeded to extra time.
Bellingham emerged as the key player, reacting swiftly after Nyland spilled a powerful shot from substitute Morgan Rogers, scoring from close range to send England into the semifinals. England will now face either defending champions Argentina or Switzerland at Atlanta Stadium on July 15.
Player Milestones and Records
Bellingham was awarded Player of the Match, and he, along with captain Harry Kane, has now scored six goals each in the 2026 World Cup, marking the first instance of two England players scoring at least five goals in a single tournament edition.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford also reached a significant milestone, making his 18th FIFA World Cup appearance, thus becoming England's most-capped goalkeeper in World Cup history, surpassing Peter Shilton's previous record of 17 matches.
For Norway, the defeat concluded a remarkable campaign that included their first-ever appearance in a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal. Their previous best performances were Round of 16 finishes in 1938 and 1998, along with a group-stage appearance in the 1994 World Cup.
