As the pickleball scene in India flourishes with an increase in tournaments and participation, Varun Chetal, co-owner of HorizonX Courtplay, emphasizes that this growth aligns with their original vision for the Gurgaon facility. In a conversation with a sports media outlet, Chetal highlighted that the venue was specifically designed to accommodate large-scale national competitions as the sport gains traction nationwide.
“We have observed a steady rise in pickleball's popularity over the years, particularly in recent months. Numerous tournaments are now being organized, not just in Gurgaon but throughout India,” Chetal remarked. “This facility was built with that vision; we aimed to host events of various scales, including PWR 700, PWR 400, and potentially PWR 1000 tournaments in the future.”
Chetal noted that the infrastructure was thoughtfully designed to cater to both players and spectators. “With eight courts and a dedicated viewing area for fans and participants, the venue can accommodate over 1,000 attendees, making it ideal for high-level tournaments,” he explained.
Moreover, he believes that hosting national competitions has significantly elevated the quality of local play by attracting athletes from different regions. “It’s been remarkable. Players from various states have come here to compete, showcasing exceptional matches and high-caliber performances,” he stated. “This exposure is invaluable for local players, as it enhances their skills and experience.”
Looking forward to the upcoming Haryana Open, which will also act as the selection trials for the Pickleball World Cup in the 50+ and 60+ age categories, Chetal anticipates a highly competitive atmosphere. “It’s going to be exciting. When we initially opened this facility, we hosted a tournament for the 50+ and 60+ categories, and the turnout was fantastic,” he shared. “I encourage players from all states in these age groups to sign up. It’s a wonderful opportunity, and I expect to see some fierce competition.”
