Thrilling Opening Round Highlights

The Aurionpro International Grandmaster Chess Tournament commenced with great enthusiasm at the World Trade Centre in Mumbai on June 17. The event kicked off with a remarkable upset in Round 1, as reported by the tournament organizers.


In a stunning turn of events, 13-year-old Hriday Maniar, a rising star from the local chess scene, managed to secure a draw against the experienced Slovak Grandmaster Manik Mikulas. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Hriday's budding career.


Despite facing a formidable opponent with a rating nearly 500 points higher, Hriday displayed exceptional skill and composure, executing his strategies flawlessly. This match is being celebrated as one of the most surprising outcomes of the tournament's opening round.


Aside from this impressive performance, the other 15 Grandmasters advanced smoothly into the second round of this 9-round Swiss format tournament. A total of 293 players from 18 different countries are participating, competing for a substantial prize pool of ₹25.00 lakhs.


The tournament is being organized by the Indian Chess School in collaboration with the All India Chess Federation.
