New Delhi [India], May 15: As the countdown begins for the highly anticipated Test match at Lord's between South Africa and Australia, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed a substantial prize pool for the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship.
The total prize money for the WTC 2023-25 Final is set at $5.76 million USD, which is more than double the amount awarded in the previous two editions, according to the ICC.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to announce that the winner of the WTC 25 Final will receive $3.6 million, while the runner-up will take home $2.1 million. This increase in prize money reflects our commitment to enhancing the prestige of Test cricket and building on the momentum from earlier WTC cycles.”
The champions will earn $3.6 million, a significant rise from the $1.6 million awarded in both 2021 and 2023, while the runners-up will receive $2.16 million, up from $800,000.
To celebrate the 30-day countdown to this ultimate Test, the ICC has also released a promotional video featuring key players such as South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma, star pacer Kagiso Rabada, and Australia's Steve Smith, alongside cricket legends like Shaun Pollock and Ravi Shastri.
South Africa secured its place in the WTC25 final by topping the standings, thanks to victories over teams like Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, along with a drawn series against India.
Australia clinched their spot in the final with a 3-1 victory over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, complemented by a clean sweep of Pakistan and series wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
Jay Shah remarked on the competitive nature of this WTC cycle, noting, “The finalists were determined only towards the end of the competition, showcasing outstanding performances from various teams, culminating in a final between these two remarkable squads—a true celebration of cricket.”
He added, “I am confident that fans at Lord's and those watching globally will witness exceptional cricket when Australia and South Africa face off in less than a month.”
Both captains are eager for victory at Lord's, with South Africa aiming for their first ICC title, while Australia seeks to become the first team to win the tournament twice.
Temba Bavuma stated, “We are thrilled to reach the World Test Championship Final, which presents a great opportunity for us to secure an ICC title. Test cricket is vital, and the World Test Championship adds context to this format. Lord's is the perfect venue for this significant match, and we will strive to perform our best against Australia.”
Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, expressed pride in defending their title at Lord's, saying, “It’s an honor to reach the final, and we look forward to the challenge that South Africa will present at the home of cricket.”
