Day 2 Highlights of Major League Pickleball


The second day of the Major League Pickleball (MLP) event in Austin on June 12 was filled with thrilling matches. The Columbus Sliders and New Jersey 5s continued to dominate their respective groups, Group A and Group B. After suffering a 1-3 loss to the New Jersey 5s, the Bay Area Breakers made a strong comeback, defeating the Atlanta Bouncers 4-0. Meanwhile, the New Jersey 5s, champions of the MLP St. Louis, showcased their impressive form by overpowering the Florida Smash with a 4-0 victory.


In a nail-biting match, the Columbus Sliders edged out the California Black Bears 3-2, which was the highlight of the day. The Black Bears later redeemed themselves with a decisive 4-0 win against the Carolina Hogs. The New Jersey 5s secured their second win of the day by overcoming the Atlanta Bouncers 3-1.


In the match against the Black Bears, the Sliders initially fell behind 0-1 after their women's doubles team of Danni-Elle Townsend and Judit Castillo lost 8-11 to Kiora Kunimoto and Sahra Dennehy. However, the Sliders quickly regained momentum when CJ Klinger and Andrei Daescu won their match 11-9 against Joseph Wild and Anouar Braham. Klinger then teamed up with Townsend to secure a mixed doubles victory, putting the Sliders ahead 2-1.


As the Sliders looked poised for victory, the Black Bears fought back, with Kunimoto and James Delgado winning 11-7 against Castillo and Daescu, leveling the tie at 2-2. This led to a DreamBreaker, where Townsend clinched the win for the Sliders with a commanding 21-9 performance against Sahra.


In other matches, the SoCal Hard Eights triumphed over the Miami Pickleball Club 3-1, while both the Dallas Flash and Texas Ranchers secured victories by the same margin against the Bay Area Breakers and Florida Smash, respectively. However, SoCal ended the day on a low note, losing 1-3 to the Columbus Sliders. In the Texas Ranchers versus Dallas Flash match, Texas emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline.
