Countdown to the World Test Championship Final

New Delhi: As the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final approaches, set to take place at Lord’s between Australia and South Africa, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the event. The champions of this one-off match will receive double the amount awarded in the previous two tournaments.

The total prize pool for the WTC 2023-25 cycle stands at USD 5.76 million, which is more than twice that of earlier editions. The winning team will take home USD 3.6 million (approximately 30,79,48,931 Indian rupees), a notable rise from the USD 1.6 million given to the winners in both 2021 and 2023.

The runners-up will also benefit from this increase, earning USD 2.16 million (around 18,47,96,390 Indian rupees), up from USD 800,000. India, who finished third in this cycle, will receive 12,31,98,048 rupees. “This third cycle of the ICC World Test Championship has been thrilling, with the finalists determined only towards the end,” said an ICC representative.

“The championship has highlighted outstanding performances from various teams, culminating in a final that showcases two exceptional squads—a true celebration of cricket.”

ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his excitement, stating, “I am confident that fans at Lord’s and those watching globally will witness top-tier cricket in this esteemed format when Australia and South Africa clash in less than a month. I wish both teams the best in their preparations for this prestigious match.”

South Africa secured their place in the final by topping the WTC standings, achieving series victories against Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, along with a drawn series against India at home. They are eager to claim their first WTC title.

South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma, remarked, “We are thrilled to reach the World Test Championship Final, which presents a great opportunity to win an ICC title. Test cricket is vital, and the World Test Championship adds context to this format.” He added, “Lord’s is the perfect venue for this significant match, and we are all committed to giving our best against Australia. With less than a month remaining, anticipation is building, and fans worldwide will be following our journey on June 11.”

Australia secured their final spot with a 3-1 victory over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, complemented by a 3-0 sweep of Pakistan and series wins against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. They aim to become the first team to win the WTC title twice.

Captain Pat Cummins stated, “We are incredibly proud to defend the World Test Championship at Lord’s. This achievement reflects the hard work of everyone involved over the past two years. We look forward to reuniting in England soon and facing the challenge South Africa will present at the home of cricket.”
