European Parliament Calls for Investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino
Growing Pressure on FIFA President
Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, is under mounting scrutiny as European lawmakers amplify their calls for an independent inquiry into his connections with former USA President Donald Trump. This scrutiny has intensified particularly due to the contentious decision to overturn the red card suspension of Folarin Balogun. In a notable development, 72 members of the European Parliament have sent a letter to the heads of football associations across the 27 EU member states, urging them to support a formal investigation into Infantino's actions. The letter highlights concerns regarding the FIFA chief's involvement in the unusual decision to lift Balogun's red card suspension and questions whether there was any influence from the US administration.
“Member associations play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the rules and ensuring accountability for violations,” the lawmakers stated in their letter. They further urged the associations to join the growing calls for an investigation into Infantino's ties with Trump.
Understanding the Folarin Balogun Incident
The Folarin Balogun Controversy Explained
Folarin Balogun received a red card for a foul during the USA's match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Following this, FIFA imposed an automatic one-match suspension, which would have kept him out of the Round of 16 clash against Belgium. However, in an unexpected turn of events, FIFA's disciplinary committee lifted the suspension just days later, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium. FIFA cited Article 27 in their decision, indicating that the ban could still be enforced later in the year if he committed a similar foul.
The decision raised eyebrows, especially after Trump revealed that he had personally contacted Infantino to discuss the suspension. Trump later expressed his gratitude on social media, praising FIFA for reversing what he termed a significant injustice. Infantino has strongly denied any personal involvement in the decision, asserting that he merely informed Trump about FIFA's established protocols. “I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies, and the case would be resolved by the appropriate authorities,” Infantino stated, emphasizing his commitment to FIFA's principles.
Despite these reassurances, the abrupt reversal faced harsh criticism from UEFA, which labeled the action as "unjustifiable" and claimed it undermined the integrity of the sport. UEFA expressed concern that when the guardians of the rules fail to uphold them, the credibility of the competition is jeopardized.
Ongoing Concerns from the European Parliament
Not The First Complaint By The European Parliament
This recent push for an investigation into the red card incident is not an isolated case. It marks the second significant intervention by the European Parliament regarding Infantino's conduct and his relationship with Trump. Just days prior, 50 members of the European Parliament had reached out to Infantino and the FIFA Disciplinary Council, supporting an ethics complaint from the human rights organization FairSquare. This complaint focused on Infantino's controversial decision to present Trump with the inaugural "FIFA Peace Prize" in December 2025.
The lawmakers contended that awarding the Peace Prize raised serious questions about FIFA's commitment to its own statutes, which require strict political neutrality. In response, Infantino defended the award in an interview, asserting that Trump “objectively… deserves it” for his efforts in promoting peace and unity.
