Improving Your Overhead Smash Technique

Professional pickleball coach Tanner Tomassi has provided valuable advice for players aiming to refine their overhead smash. He highlighted frequent mistakes that hinder players from achieving both power and precision. In a recent post on his Instagram, Tomassi identified three primary errors that players often make when executing this challenging shot.

Firstly, he pointed out that many players fail to leverage their paddle correctly. "When preparing to hit the ball, you might be swinging without proper leverage," he explained. To enhance the snap of the shot, he recommended a simple adjustment: "Imagine you're scratching your back with your paddle to create that snap."

The second mistake involves the use of the off-hand. Tomassi noted that players often neglect this hand, which is crucial for guiding the shot and maintaining control. "Without pointing at the ball with your off-hand, you lose control. This hand helps engage your shoulders in the shot," he stated. Many players simply swing without this guidance, resulting in erratic ball placement.

Lastly, Tomassi addressed body positioning. He mentioned that players frequently attempt the overhead smash with their chest facing the court. He stressed that a sideways stance is essential for this shot. "We need to be fully turned sideways to utilize our entire body for generating power," he added.

Tomassi's insights underscore the significance of proper technique and body mechanics in pickleball. Mastering the overhead smash requires not only strength but also efficient body movement. By addressing these common mistakes—adjusting paddle motion, utilizing the off-hand, and adopting the correct body orientation—players can greatly enhance their power, accuracy, and overall performance on the court.
