Essential Tips for Improving Your Pickleball Drive Technique
Mastering Your Pickleball Drive
Len Yang, a professional pickleball player, has identified frequent errors players make when driving the ball and has provided a straightforward guide to rectify these issues. In a recent post on his Instagram, he addressed players facing challenges with their drive's consistency and power, stating, “Do your drives look like this? If you said yes, this is how the pros do it.”
Yang emphasized that a solid drive starts even before the swing. He advised players to establish a low stance and shift their weight onto the outside leg, highlighting the significance of balance and preparation. Furthermore, he pointed out that the positioning of the paddle is crucial for creating topspin. “Your paddle should begin below the ball, allowing you to swing from low to high to generate topspin,” he explained.
He clarified that true power in a drive does not solely stem from arm strength. “The power originates from the rotation of your legs and hips, rather than just using your arm,” he noted, indicating that many players depend too much on their upper body. “If your drives are inconsistent, this could be the reason,” he added.
Yang also stressed the importance of the contact point and follow-through. “Ensure you hit the ball in front of you and finish your swing across your body, driving at about 60-70% power,” he recommended, advocating for controlled aggression instead of maximum force.
He listed common pitfalls that can affect consistency: “Relying solely on your arm, leaning back while hitting, and making contact too late.” Yang concluded by urging players to revisit the basics during their next practice session. “Save this video for your next court visit and follow for more helpful tips,” he encouraged.
As the drive becomes a vital tool in contemporary pickleball, Yang’s insights provide a clear framework for players aiming to enhance their power and reliability on the court.
