Erling Haaland Supports Coach's Strategy Despite Loss to France
Haaland Defends Coach's Decisions After World Cup Defeat
Massachusetts [US], June 27: After Norway's defeat against France in their final group stage match of the FIFA World Cup, striker Erling Haaland stood by coach Stale Solbakken's choice to rest ten players, including himself, stating that "France was simply the superior team."
Having already secured a spot in the knockout stage with victories in their initial two matches, coach Stale opted to make significant changes to the lineup, resting key players like Haaland and Martin Odegaard. Although this decision faced criticism, Haaland, who had scored two goals in each of the previous games, defended his coach's strategy.
Frederik Aursnes was the sole player to retain his position from the last match.
In comments reported by De Telegraaf and cited by a sports news outlet, the coach expressed regret that the traveling supporters missed the chance to see their favorite players perform.
"Our goal is to advance as far as possible, and I must make choices that I believe will lead us there. My only regret is for the fans who wanted to see Erling, Martin, and the other stars in action," he remarked.
Haaland echoed his manager's sentiments, asserting that even with their best lineup, the outcome would likely remain unchanged.
"I mentioned earlier that it didn't matter to me, and I still feel that way. France was the better team. Even if we had our strongest eleven, I doubt we could have overcome them," he stated.
Haaland acknowledged France's depth of talent, highlighting players like Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, who scored a hat-trick, and Michael Olise.
"They present a challenge for any team, and I genuinely believe they can go very far in this tournament. What they demonstrated against us was formidable," Haaland concluded.
