Enzo Maresca Takes Over as Manchester City Manager Amid Chelsea Compensation Drama
Manchester City Appoints Enzo Maresca
On June 29, Manchester City officially announced Enzo Maresca as the new head coach, succeeding Pep Guardiola. However, this transition comes with a significant twist, as both the club and Maresca are required to compensate Chelsea. This situation arises despite Maresca having departed from Chelsea six months prior to this announcement. Reports indicate that Manchester City will pay Chelsea a hefty £17 million in compensation. Additionally, Chelsea disclosed that Maresca will also provide a 'confidential settlement' to the club.
Understanding the Compensation Scenario
Typically, when a club hires a manager under contract, compensation is expected. However, Maresca's situation is unique since he had already left Chelsea. Furthermore, it is unusual for a manager to pay their former club, making this case particularly noteworthy. Chelsea stated that they did not intend to dismiss Maresca but felt compelled to accept his resignation, attributing the team's disappointing 10th-place finish to the disruptions caused during the season.
Full Statement from Chelsea
Chelsea FC acknowledges that the 2025/26 season was extremely disappointing for both the club and its fans. A significant factor was the disruption stemming from the changes in the Head Coach position during the Christmas period. We believe it is essential to clarify to our supporters the circumstances surrounding our former Head Coach's departure on January 1, 2026.
Last autumn, our former Head Coach indicated a potential opportunity to succeed Pep Guardiola at the season's end. It became evident that he was eager to pursue this chance, despite being under a long-term contract. In December 2025, he unexpectedly resigned, leaving us feeling betrayed as we believed his focus was elsewhere.
No club desires to change its head coach mid-season. However, given his decision not to fulfill his responsibilities, we had no choice but to protect our players, supporters, and the club's integrity by accepting his resignation. A confidential settlement has been reached with Manchester City, which includes compensation, as well as a separate agreement with the former Head Coach.
Looking ahead, we are excited to have Xabi Alonso as our new Manager, who possesses an exceptional football intellect and the highest professional integrity, ensuring the success our supporters expect.
Enzo Maresca's Apology
In an Instagram post, Maresca expressed regret over his decision to leave Chelsea, emphasizing that it was a personal choice. He acknowledged the disruption his departure caused and thanked Chelsea for the opportunities provided. "At the end of December 2025, I made the difficult decision to leave Chelsea. This decision was solely mine. My resignation allowed me to join Manchester City, a club I know well. I am thrilled to be here and apologize for any disruption my mid-season departure may have caused. I cherish the memories and successes I shared with Chelsea and am grateful to the club, the owners, and the fans for their support," Maresca stated.
