This outcome propelled Argentina into the World Cup final, where they will compete against Spain on Sunday, July 19 (local time). Meanwhile, England's aspirations of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966 were dashed.
In a message shared on X, the England team conveyed their heartbreak over the tournament exit but also commended the players, coaching staff, and fans for their unwavering support throughout the competition.
"We are completely heartbroken that our dream ends here, but we are so proud of this group, our staff, and you – our amazing fans. Your support in North America and back home has been nothing short of incredible. Thank you," they expressed.
Argentina, the defending champions, executed a remarkable late comeback to secure their victory over England. The first half was a closely fought contest, with both teams vying for control in midfield and generating few clear opportunities. England finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon converted a cross from Morgan Rogers, putting the Three Lions in the lead.
After gaining the advantage, England adopted a more defensive stance, allowing Argentina to apply pressure. The defending champions responded with vigor, with Jordan Pickford making crucial saves and Alexis Mac Allister hitting the post before Argentina found the equalizer. In the 85th minute, Enzo Fernandez scored after receiving a pass from Lionel Messi, leveling the match.
Argentina completed their comeback in stoppage time when Messi provided a cross for Lautaro Martinez, who headed in the winning goal. Despite England's late attempts to regain control, Argentina held firm to secure their place in the final. England will now face France in the third-place match, while Argentina prepares to meet Spain for the championship.
