England's Anticipation for the Upcoming Test Series

London [UK], June 12: As England gears up for a five-match Test series against India, head coach Brendon McCullum expressed confidence in his team's diverse bowling lineup. He emphasized the excitement of facing a formidable cricketing nation.

India is set to embark on a new chapter in Test cricket, entering the series without seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. This series will also mark the commencement of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, starting June 20.

In an interview with Sky Sports Cricket, McCullum highlighted the importance of refreshing the team's mindset, stating, 'We know where we want to get to as a Test team.'

Despite the absence of some key bowlers, he praised the squad's depth, mentioning Chris Woakes, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue as part of their pace attack.

McCullum also commended young spinner Shoaib Bashir, noting his continuous improvement in Test cricket. Since his debut last year, Bashir has claimed 58 wickets in 16 Tests, boasting an impressive average of 36.39 and best figures of 6/81.

'We know we will face challenges against India, who will arrive well-prepared. They are an exceptional cricketing nation with high expectations, and we are eager to compete against them,' he concluded.

The series is scheduled from June to August, with matches taking place at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London).

In a surprising move, Jamie Overton has been recalled to England's squad for the first Test following Gus Atkinson's withdrawal due to a hamstring injury. Jacob Bethell has also rejoined the squad, while Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse return after missing the recent victory over Zimbabwe.

England's lineup has seen significant changes since their 4-1 series loss in India last year, with James Anderson retiring shortly after that tour. Additionally, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes, and Ollie Robinson have been left out. India, too, is undergoing a transition, with R Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma retiring, and Shubman Gill stepping in as captain for the first time.

India has not secured a Test series win in England since 2007 and has sent several players ahead to compete for India A against the Lions, while the remainder of their squad will arrive in the UK on Friday.

Projected Playing XI for the first Test: Ben Stokes (Durham) – Captain, Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Sam Cook (Essex), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jamie Smith (Surrey), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).
