Inauguration of the SJFI National Convention
New Delhi, March 13: During a compelling speech at the commencement of the Golden Jubilee celebrations for the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI), Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, emphasized the importance of recognizing non-cricket sports and nurturing grassroots talent. This event took place at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, marking the return of the National Convention to the capital after over twenty years.
The four-day event, organized by the Delhi Sports Journalist Association (DSJA), kicked off with Khadse highlighting the significant role sports journalists play in fostering a sports culture. She stated, “Your efforts are vital in energizing sports and guiding the youth on how to engage in various sports.”
Khadse also pointed out the necessity of promoting non-cricket sports and discussed government initiatives aimed at enhancing sports tourism and creating career opportunities in fields like sports science. She reiterated the importance of journalism as a pillar of democracy, stressing its role in promoting social welfare and enhancing India's global image through sports media. Additionally, she called for increased female participation in sports journalism.
The opening ceremony was graced by Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao and prominent figures from the sports journalism community. The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by honoring key contributors to the convention. DSJA President Abhishek Tripathi recognized Khadse, while Secretary Sabi Hussain honored Ranjan Rao.
Leaders from SJFI, including President Saraju Chakraborty and Secretary V. Ramesh, presented ceremonial shawls to the chief guests. In a gesture of appreciation, Khadse reciprocated by honoring the SJFI leaders and joined them in recognizing state presidents and secretaries from various affiliated sports journalists' associations nationwide.
During the ceremony, Nabanita Das from Jindal Steel was also honored on behalf of Naveen Jindal, a Member of Parliament. A significant moment of the evening was the unveiling of the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Trophy and the AC Bali Table Tennis Trophy, marking the launch of the competitive segment of the convention. The draw for the T20 tournament was also held, setting up matches between South vs East and West vs North.
In his closing remarks, DSJA President Tripathi expressed gratitude to the delegates and dignitaries, reflecting on the challenges faced in organizing the SJFI Convention in Delhi after 23 years and acknowledging the support from the Sports Ministry that facilitated the event's success.
