Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Wimbledon Due to Stress Fracture
Emma Raducanu's Wimbledon Withdrawal
New Delhi, June 29: Emma Raducanu has officially pulled out of Wimbledon after medical scans confirmed that her leg injury is a stress fracture.
The British tennis star had spoken to the media at the All England Club on Sunday, expressing her intention to compete against Antonia Ruzic in the first round on Monday, according to reports from ESPN.
However, a subsequent medical evaluation that evening indicated that the injury was more severe than initially thought, leading Raducanu to withdraw from her home Grand Slam for the second time in four years.
In an emotional Instagram post, the 23-year-old shared, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but sadly I’ve had to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon.”
She continued, “I’ve done everything I could to be ready for tomorrow, but after a final scan tonight, the issue I’ve been managing has turned into a stress fracture, and I’ve been advised by medical professionals to stop pushing myself.”
Raducanu expressed her disappointment, stating, “Competing at Wimbledon in front of a home crowd means everything to me, so this is really hard to accept. I appreciate all your support and encouragement during this tough time. I look forward to returning soon.”
Concerns about Raducanu's fitness first arose on Wednesday when she was spotted wearing a protective boot. She only returned to practice on Saturday, where she trained with significant strapping on her lower right leg.
During her practice session, Raducanu appeared to move cautiously and had to cut her training short against Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya after losing four consecutive games, raising further questions about her readiness for Wimbledon.
