Born in Bedford in 2000, Emilio Gay has a diverse heritage, with family roots in Grenada and Italy. He began his cricketing career with Northamptonshire, where he played at the youth level before signing a professional contract in 2019.
In 2024, he joined Durham on a three-year deal, aiming to represent England. That season, he excelled in the County Championship, scoring over 1000 runs, including two centuries and five fifties, at an average of 44.30 across 12 matches.
Recent Achievements
In the current County Championship season, Gay has continued to impress, accumulating 552 runs, including three centuries and a fifty, at an average of 78.85 in six matches. His outstanding performance caught the attention of England selectors, leading to his inclusion in the Test squad against New Zealand as a replacement for Zak Crawley.
International Experience with Italy
Before his England debut, Gay represented Italy in the 2025 T20 World Cup Qualifiers, playing three T20Is due to his Italian heritage. He was also approached by Cricket West Indies for a potential opportunity to play for them but chose to focus on his goal of representing England.
