New Talent Energizes Major League Pickleball

Since its inception by Steve Kuhn in 2021, Major League Pickleball (MLP) has been on a quest to discover the next wave of talent. This season, however, a shift is evident as players from the APP Tour, PPA Tour Australia, and Junior PPA are bringing renewed vigor to the league, eager to showcase their skills. Their arrival has not only bolstered team lineups but also hinted at the future of professional pickleball.

Sofia Sewing

Among the standout newcomers is Sofia Sewing from the Palm Beach Royals. Before her debut, Sewing expressed her eagerness to “test the waters” in MLP for 2026. What began as an experiment has turned into a remarkable season, as she currently ranks 15th in the individual standings with a 22-9 record and has formed a formidable women's doubles team with Tina Pisnik, going undefeated at 6-0 during MLP St. Pete.

Dannie-Elle Townsend

Another player making waves is Danni-Elle Townsend, who was picked third overall by the Columbus Sliders. Arriving with high expectations, she quickly demonstrated her capabilities. Despite partnering with three different players in women's doubles during the first three events, she achieved a commendable 19-12 record, aiding her team in securing second and third place finishes. Now with the Dallas Flash, she is anticipated to play a crucial role in revitalizing their season.

Casey Diamond

Few narratives have captivated fans like that of Casey Diamond. Just a week prior to MLP St. Pete, he was not on any roster. His chance came as an alternate, and he seized it with remarkable flair, making highlight plays that earned him a spot on SportsCenter's Top Ten twice in three days. His dynamic style has quickly made him one of the league's most exciting players.

Sahra Dennehy

Australian player Sahra Dennehy has also made a significant impact. Known for her singles prowess, she has emerged as a key player for the California Black Bears, providing stability and leadership in a young team while positioning herself as a potential game-changer in the postseason race.

Elsie Hendershot

At just 13 years old, Elsie Hendershot has created one of the season's most uplifting stories. Drafted 29th overall by the St. Louis Shock, she made history in St. Pete by becoming the youngest player to win a game in MLP. Partnering with Hayden Patriquin, she helped achieve an 11-0 victory against Miami, a moment that quickly became a highlight of the year. Following her trade to the Chicago Slice, she is expected to receive even more opportunities.

Nico Acevedo

Nico Acevedo's journey is distinct from his peers. Not coming from the APP, Australian circuit, or Junior PPA, he made his mark through outstanding performance. Initially a lesser-known pick by the Miami Pickleball Club at 25th overall, he impressed in Columbus before being traded to the Texas Ranchers, reflecting the league's belief in his significant athletic potential.

These six athletes exemplify how MLP's talent pool is expanding beyond conventional routes. As the league continues to draw athletes from around the globe, fresh personalities and narratives are emerging alongside established stars. With MLP New York set to commence on June 25 at Sportime Randall's Island, attention will once again be on these rising talents.
