Egypt's Historic FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualification: A New Era for the Pharaohs
Egypt's National Team Makes History
Cairo, Egypt - On July 4, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi celebrated the national football team's remarkable achievement of reaching the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This milestone was marked by their first knockout match victory, where they triumphed over Australia in a thrilling penalty shootout.
For the first time ever, Egypt advanced to the last 16 after a tense 1-1 draw that led to a 4-2 win on penalties in Dallas, setting the stage for a matchup against either the reigning champions Argentina or Cape Verde.
In a message shared on X, El-Sisi commended the players for their dedication and teamwork throughout the tournament. He expressed, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the sons of Egypt, the heroes of our national team, for this historic achievement. Your belief in your abilities, competitive spirit, and determination have led to this success. Wishing you all the best in the upcoming challenges, and may your journey of pride continue."
The victory also garnered admiration from across the Arab world, with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, congratulating Egypt on this significant success. He remarked on X, "Congratulations to the Egyptian people and their leadership for the national team's qualification to the Round of 16. Today, the joy of the Arabs is Egyptian. A heroic performance and a fighting spirit. Best wishes to all Arabs and joy to our peoples."
On the pitch, Egypt faced a determined Australian team, creating a new chapter in their football history. Australia started strong, nearly scoring when Cristian Volpato's long-range shot hit the crossbar, and Jordan Bos was thwarted by a crucial tackle from Rami Rabia.
Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute with their first shot on target, as Karim Hafez's cross found Emam Ashour, who headed it in at the far post.
Australia equalized early in the second half when Mohamed Hany inadvertently redirected a free-kick into his own net, leading to a tense finish.
Egypt nearly clinched victory in regular time, but goalkeeper Patrick Beach made a spectacular save against Rabia, and Harry Souttar blocked Haisem Hassan's attempt.
Extra time saw no goals, with Mohamed Salah missing a key opportunity by shooting over from a promising position.
The penalty shootout was decisive for Egypt. After Souttar missed Australia's first penalty, Salah scored with a Panenka. Following Lucas Herrington's miss for Australia, Hossam Abdelmaguid confidently converted the final penalty, securing a 4-2 victory.
