ECB Adjusts T20I Match Timings for Enhanced Viewership During India Tour
New Match Timings for T20I Series
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has revised the start times for the T20I matches against India, moving them from the original 6:30 PM local time (11 PM IST) to an earlier slot of 5:30 PM (10 PM IST) to boost television ratings.
India's cricket team is set to visit England for a series of eight white-ball matches, which includes three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and five T20Is, scheduled from July 1 to July 19, according to reports.
Financial Implications of the India Tour
The decision to adjust the match timings was made after discussions involving the ECB, the venues, the opposing board, and both domestic and international broadcasters, specifically Sky Sports in the UK and Sony Sports Network in India.
This change from the previously standard 6:30 PM start time underscores the ECB's dependence on lucrative broadcast deals, particularly those involving India. The ECB's recent financial report indicates that they expect to see profits this year due to the Indian tour, although they foresee potential losses in 2027, even with the Ashes series against Australia scheduled.
"It is important to note that the ECB's revenue is cyclical, influenced by the scheduling of high-value series against various opponents," the report stated.
High Demand for Tickets and Tour Logistics
Tickets for the series went on sale last year, and all three ODIs have sold out, thanks in part to the star power of Indian players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Only a limited number of tickets for the T20Is remain available.
With sunset occurring after 9 PM during the peak summer months in England, all five T20I matches are expected to conclude under floodlights.
Exciting New Squad and Upcoming Fixtures
The Indian team for the T20I series features a 16-member squad, including 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, who takes over from Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper who led the team to a T20 World Cup victory.
Cricket Ireland has also noted a surge in interest for their two home T20Is against India on June 26 and 28, where Sooryavanshi could potentially make his international debut, setting a record as the youngest Indian player to do so, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record from 1989. Both matches sold out quickly, with the Civil Service ground in Belfast accommodating around 4,500 spectators.
