Dwayne Bravo Reflects on MS Dhoni's Trust During IPL 2018
Bravo Remembers a Key Moment with Dhoni
Dwayne Bravo, a former player for the West Indies and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), shared a memorable experience from the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL). He recounted how MS Dhoni, the then-captain, recognized and appreciated his bowling abilities, referring to him as a 'brother from another mother.' Bravo, who played for CSK from 2011 to 2015 and again from 2018 to 2022, winning three IPL titles, discussed this on the 'Beard Before Wicket' podcast. He recalled an incident where Dhoni advised him against diving on the field, emphasizing that his bowling overs were more crucial than saving a few runs.
Dhoni's Valuable Guidance
During the podcast, Bravo explained, 'In 2018, after our return from the ban, I attempted to dive for a ball while fielding at long-on. Being 34 at the time, Dhoni called me over and said, 'Do not ever dive on my cricket field again. Your four overs are more important than saving four runs.' His words left a significant impact on me.'
Bravo continued, 'After that, I focused on fielding within the circle. Dhoni understands each player's strengths and wants them to excel in their roles. He told me, 'This is what I want from you, and I'm satisfied with that.' In my first over, I expressed my fielding preferences, and he respected my decision, which made me feel trusted and valued.'
Commending Dhoni and Fleming's Leadership
Bravo also praised the leadership of Dhoni and head coach Stephen Fleming, highlighting their ability to let players express their unique styles. He noted, 'They are non-judgmental and maintain a consistent approach, regardless of individual or team performance. This consistency is what makes this franchise unique.'
Despite CSK's challenging last season, where they secured only four wins out of 14 matches, Bravo's respect for the team's leadership remains unwavering.
