Gukesh's Historic Victory

Stavanger, Norway - June 6: Dommaraju Gukesh, the reigning World Champion, continues to etch his name in chess history by clinching his fourth win at the 2025 Norway Chess tournament, as reported by a leading chess platform.

In the ninth round, Gukesh triumphed over China's Wei Yi, accumulating 14.5 points and closing in on tournament leader Magnus Carlsen, who is just half a point ahead.

Wei opted for the solid Petroff defense, but commentators speculated he might have fallen into world championship preparation when Gukesh played the unusual move 8.Qd3, later repositioning his queen to c4.

Despite taking significant risks in the opening against GM Wei Yi, Gukesh managed to turn the game around and secure a stylish victory.

Meanwhile, Carlsen sacrificed a pawn against GM Fabiano Caruana but successfully converted his advantage in the endgame.

GM Hikaru Nakamura drew against GM Arjun Erigaisi in a classical match before winning decisively in the armageddon round.

In the Women's Norway Chess 2025, all three classical matches concluded with clear results, leading to a significant shift in the standings. GM Anna Muzychuk defeated Women's World Champion GM Ju Wenjun, taking a two-point lead.

Former leader GM Koneru Humpy had a winning position against GM Lei Tingjie but made a blunder that cost her a piece, placing her in second. IM Sara Khadem also secured her second classical win of the tournament against GM Vaishali Rameshbabu.

Earlier in the tournament, Gukesh achieved a remarkable comeback victory against former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6, reversing a losing position.

Reflecting on his match with Gukesh, Carlsen stated, 'The dream of playing a really good tournament burst with that game... I aimed for a score that reflects my belief that I am still significantly better at chess, and since I couldn't achieve that, a potential tournament win wouldn't hold as much value,' as shared in a video on a social media platform.
