In Kolkata, Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India and a former captain of the Indian team, expressed his enthusiasm for Manpreet Singh potentially surpassing his long-held record of 412 international appearances. He views this as a promising indicator for the advancement of Indian hockey.
During a discussion at RevSportz Trailblazers 4.0, Tirkey stated, "I would be thrilled if Manpreet breaks my record. Records are meant to be surpassed."
Reflecting on his own journey, Tirkey shared insights about reaching over 400 international matches, a milestone that made him the first player globally to achieve such a feat, emphasizing the commitment necessary for sustained success in the sport.
"Being the first to cross 400 international caps is a significant achievement for me. I understand the dedication required; one must maintain peak fitness and consistently perform for the nation," he remarked.
He further noted, "If Manpreet continues his current form and keeps fit, he has a strong chance not only to break my record but also to bring more accolades to India. It would be incredibly special to witness another Indian become the most capped player during my tenure as Hockey India President."
Team's Focus on Improvement
Manpreet Singh, who has rejoined the training camp, shared his thoughts on the team's mindset as they prepare for a pivotal year in Indian hockey. He acknowledged that recent performances have highlighted areas needing enhancement.
"I am back in camp and putting in the effort. This year is crucial for us. It was a wake-up call to recognize where we must improve. The team's morale is high, and everyone is eager to address the areas that need work," Manpreet stated.
He emphasized the significance of the upcoming Asian Games, which serve as a direct qualification route for the Olympic Games. "The Asian Games are vital for us as they present our opportunity to qualify for the Olympics. We now understand what we need to focus on and have time to prepare before the major tournaments," he added.
Professional Growth in Indian Hockey
Former captain Sardar Singh praised the professional framework that has emerged around Indian hockey in recent years. He noted, "Hockey India has been operating very professionally for the past six or seven years. We have excellent coaches from junior levels to the senior team, which has significantly aided player development."
"The experience of senior players is invaluable on the field and helps younger athletes integrate into the team. Coaches are adept at determining when players should peak and how to prepare them for significant competitions," he explained.
Women's Hockey Progress
Rani Rampal, another former captain, discussed the advancements in women's hockey and the transitional phase the team is currently experiencing. "Transitions take time; young players require exposure and match experience to develop," she remarked.
Reflecting on the Indian Women's Hockey Team's recent second-place finish at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, she added, "Competing in front of a home crowd is challenging. While there's excitement, there's also pressure. This team has a good blend of youth and experience, and I am optimistic about our performance in the World Cup."
Hockey India League's Impact
Tamal Ghosal, Chairman of Shrachi Sports, also commented on the Hockey India League's contributions. He stated, "The most significant advantage of the Hockey India League is that it has provided opportunities for new players. Many young athletes have had the chance to compete on a larger stage, which is crucial for their growth."
