India's Triumph in Para Athletics

Glasgow, July 30: In a remarkable display of talent, India achieved a stunning finish in the para athletics segment at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Dilip Mahadu Gavit secured the gold medal in the men's 100m T47 event, setting a new Games Record, while his fellow athlete Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi claimed the silver, marking a dominant one-two finish for India.

Gavit completed the race in an impressive 10.71 seconds, breaking the previous Games record and earning his place at the top of the podium. Basil closely followed with a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, ensuring that India celebrated both gold and silver in one of the competition's fastest events.

This victory marks India's third gold medal in the ongoing competition, with Gavit joining fellow athletes Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila, who excelled in weightlifting and women's shot put, respectively.

Kevin Santos from England took home the bronze medal with a time of 10.85 seconds, just ahead of Australia's Jaydon Page, who finished fourth in 10.97 seconds.

The impressive results showcased India's rising prowess in para athletics, with both sprinters delivering stellar performances on the Glasgow track. Gavit's record-breaking run emphasized his exceptional form, while Basil's silver medal further enriched India's medal tally.

This historic one-two finish is anticipated to significantly enhance India's overall medal count and solidify the nation's status as a formidable force in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games.

With this achievement, India's medal tally has reached 15 in this edition, comprising 3 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze medals thus far.

Dilip Gavit hails from the small village of Toran Dongari near Nashik, Maharashtra, where he was raised in a modest farming family. His life took a drastic turn at the age of five or six when he fell from a tree, resulting in a severe injury to his right arm. Due to delayed medical attention, the injury developed into gangrene, necessitating the amputation of his arm below the elbow. Despite this significant challenge, Gavit persevered and pursued his passion for running, eventually carving out a successful career in para-athletics. He honed his skills on the unpaved roads of his village, where coach Vaijnath Kale recognized his potential and guided him into the world of professional para-athletics.

Previously, he won gold in the men's 400m T47 event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, marking India's historic 100th medal at the Games. He also made the nation proud by reaching the finals of the men's 400m T47 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
