Dhoni's Potential Last IPL Season: Insights from Irfan Pathan
Is This Dhoni's Final IPL Season?
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are gearing up for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), aiming for their sixth championship title. Irfan Pathan, a former Indian cricketer, suggests that this could be the last season for Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the team's captain.
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Pathan remarked, "CSK feels incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be our last glimpse of him in the iconic yellow jersey, and it's hard to envision CSK or the IPL without his presence. Dhoni's role this season will be crucial in uniting the team. While I'm uncertain about the number of matches he will participate in, his influence in the dressing room will be invaluable."
Preparing Future Leaders
Pathan also commented on the newly acquired player, Sanju Samson, stating, "Sanju will gain significantly from being part of the leadership group. Ruturaj Gaikwad is the current leader, but several players are being prepared for future leadership roles. This is where MS Dhoni's mentorship will be essential. I hope he can make a significant impact. There will be ongoing discussions regarding his fitness, batting order, and participation in all matches. The CSK management will approach this gradually, aiming to provide him with a memorable farewell by securing their sixth IPL title."
Addressing Jadeja's Departure
At 44 years old, Dhoni is set to don the CSK colors once again in the upcoming IPL season, having led the team to five titles and participated in all 19 editions of the tournament. With veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja moving to the Rajasthan Royals, Pathan believes that uncapped all-rounder Prashant Veer from Uttar Pradesh could step into his role.
Pathan explained, "Jadeja developed into the player he is today over time. His early days with the Rajasthan Royals under Shane Warne's guidance instilled confidence in him, marking him as a future star. This belief propelled him to his current status. Joining CSK in 2012 further enhanced his career. The same opportunity exists for Prashant Veer. Being part of CSK at a young age provides a significant advantage. If he secures a spot in the starting XI from the season's outset, he is likely to play most matches, which is a considerable benefit."
Cultivating Talent in the CSK Setup
Pathan concluded, "CSK simplifies the process for young players. With MS Dhoni and seasoned professionals around, along with Stephen Fleming as the coach, they create a supportive environment both on and off the field. In the high-pressure atmosphere of the IPL, this simplicity is incredibly beneficial. For Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer, this is an exciting and educational phase at CSK."
