Devdutt Padikkal Reflects on His Career-Defining Return to RCB in IPL 2025
A Career Turning Point for Padikkal
New Delhi: Indian cricketer Devdutt Padikkal has shared that his return to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) marked a significant shift in his career, providing him with a clearer vision of the style of cricket he aspires to play.
During the 2025 season, Padikkal was instrumental at the top of the batting order for RCB, amassing 247 runs across 10 matches with an impressive strike rate of 150.61. In the following year, he continued to shine, scoring 111 runs in just two matches at a remarkable strike rate of 201.82.
Reflecting on his journey, Padikkal stated, "I believe that auction was a pivotal moment in my career. I was at a crossroads where I needed to fully commit to the type of cricket I wanted to pursue. Returning to RCB set me on the right path towards the cricketing style I envisioned for myself," he mentioned in a video shared by RCB on X.

Padikkal further expressed, "When I received that chance with RCB, it was the moment I realized I had numerous aspects to improve upon, and I needed to dedicate myself to those areas, irrespective of the outcomes."
He made a notable debut in the IPL 2020 season with RCB, scoring 473 runs and earning the Emerging Player Award. After a few seasons with Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants, RCB reacquired him at his base price of Rs 2 Crore during the 2025 mega auction.
Reflecting on his time with LSG, he remarked, "I spent a year there, and it didn’t go as planned. It was challenging. I felt that everything revolved around financial aspects. When a franchise invests significantly in you, it creates pressure to perform, and when you don’t, it feels like a letdown. At that moment, I lacked clarity on how to navigate it."
He added, "I didn’t grasp the situation well enough. The way that season unfolded dampened many positive experiences from that year. However, it ignited a motivation within me to improve, and sometimes, those setbacks are necessary to remind you of the effort required to achieve your goals."
