The Delhi Capitals (DC) are gearing up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 with a fresh coaching lineup. Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to join as the bowling coach, while Sourav Ganguly, the ex-captain of India, is anticipated to take on the role of head coach, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Additionally, Amit Mishra, a former leg-spinner for India, will be part of the coaching team, and the iconic all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is expected to be appointed as the batting coach.
Chaminda Vaas's Coaching Experience
Chaminda Vaas, recognized as Sri Lanka's leading fast bowler, concluded his international career with an impressive tally of 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets. At 52 years old, he previously played for the Deccan Chargers during the initial three IPL seasons from 2008 to 2010. This will mark his debut in a coaching capacity within the league. Vaas has a wealth of coaching experience, having worked with the Sri Lankan national team in various roles from 2012 to 2022. He also contributed as a fast-bowling consultant and mentor at Sri Lanka Cricket, focusing on nurturing young fast bowlers. His coaching journey began with the New Zealand men's team and included a role with Ireland during the 2016 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Recently, he coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and was the head coach for Kandy Royals in the 2026 Lanka Premier League.
Amit Mishra's Transition to Coaching
Amit Mishra is stepping into the coaching realm for the first time after a notable playing career in the IPL. The 42-year-old leg-spinner has played for several teams, including Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants. Retiring from professional cricket last September, Mishra ranks among the top wicket-takers in IPL history, with 174 wickets across 162 matches. He also holds the record for the most hat-tricks in the tournament, achieving three during his IPL tenure.
Management Changes Prompt Coaching Adjustments
These coaching modifications follow a new agreement between the co-owners of Delhi Capitals, GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports, which stipulates that franchise operations will alternate between the two owners every two years. GMR had previously appointed Venugopal Rao as the director of cricket, Hemang Badani as head coach, and Munaf Patel as bowling coach for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, according to the report.
Vaas and Mishra have reportedly commenced their roles and are currently engaged with players at the Delhi Capitals academy. The franchise has yet to officially announce the full coaching staff for the upcoming IPL season.
