Deep Dasgupta Advocates for Shubman Gill as Virat Kohli's Successor in Test Cricket

Deep Dasgupta's Insights on Shubman Gill
Former Indian cricketer and commentator Deep Dasgupta is optimistic about Shubman Gill stepping into the role of a Test batter, potentially taking over Virat Kohli's position during India's upcoming tour to England. With Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, Gill's appointment as the new Test captain seems plausible. Additionally, Kohli's absence has created a vacancy at the number four position in the Indian lineup, which Dasgupta believes Gill is well-equipped to fill.
Dasgupta's Perspective on Gill's Role
Dasgupta expressed his thoughts on Star Sports, stating, “We are about to witness Shubman Gill 2.0 in a new role. I have always maintained that the middle order, particularly the number four position, is ideal for him in Test matches. Initially, I referred to the middle order generally, not anticipating Virat's early departure from this format. Now that the position is vacant, I firmly believe number four is the right fit for Shubman in red-ball cricket.”
A New Chapter for Shubman Gill
He further elaborated, “This marks a rebirth for Shubman Gill as a red-ball player. I am not overly concerned with his past statistics, as they were recorded when he was batting as an opener or at number three. Technically, he is much better suited for the number four spot or the middle order in Test cricket.”
Shubman Gill's Test Performance
Shubman Gill has demonstrated a composed demeanor and impressive batting skills in Test cricket. He has participated in 32 matches, amassing 1,893 runs with an average of 35.05. His highest score of 128 showcases his ability to deliver significant innings. Throughout his Test career, Gill has achieved 5 centuries and 7 half-centuries, maintaining a strike rate of 59.92, which reflects a traditional and cautious approach to batting, allowing him to endure through matches while contributing to the score.
