Former England cricketer and commentator David Lloyd recently stirred controversy with his remarks regarding Rishabh Pant, the vice-captain of Team India, who suffered a fractured toe during the ongoing fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Pant sustained the injury on Day 1 after being struck by a yorker from Chris Woakes. He was visibly in distress and required immediate medical assistance, ultimately being taken off the field in a buggy ambulance after retiring hurt on 37*. Following scans at a hospital, it was confirmed that he had a fractured toe.

Pant's Brave Comeback

Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant made a remarkable return to the crease, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd at Old Trafford. He resumed his innings at 37 and managed to score 54 runs off 75 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Jofra Archer.

Lloyd's Controversial Comments

While many praised Pant's courage, David Lloyd expressed skepticism about the severity of the injury. During a discussion on talkSPORT Cricket, he acknowledged Pant's determination but suggested that the Indian vice-captain might have exaggerated his condition, stating, 'He has milking that injury; it can't be that bad.' Lloyd further commented that the umpire should have considered timing out Pant for taking too long to return to the field.

Previous Injuries and Current Substitutions

This isn't the first instance of Pant displaying resilience despite injury. In the previous Test at Lord's, he injured his left index finger while keeping but still batted, scoring 74 runs in the first innings.

Due to his current injury, Dhruv Jurel has been appointed as the wicketkeeper substitute. However, Jurel is not permitted to bat in Pant's place, as per ICC regulations, which only allow substitutes to bat in concussion cases. Lloyd has called for a revision of these rules to permit like-for-like replacements for external injuries.
